With a name like salt water taffy, you could be forgiven for wondering what you are about to eat. A sweet inspired by the sea sounds intriguing, but perhaps slightly suspicious!

Luckily, its story is full of seaside charm, and its flavours are much more tempting than its name suggests. At House of McNee, our salt water taffy selection ranges from familiar fruity treats to the wonderfully unexpected. Maple & Bacon, anyone?

The best-known tale begins in Atlantic City, New Jersey, in 1883. According to the legend, a storm sent seawater over candy seller David Bradley’s stock of taffy. The next day, a young girl came in asking for sweets, and he reportedly joked that he only had “salt water taffy” available.

You can imagine his mood: wet stock, a messy shop and probably a strong desire for a quiet sit-down. Yet his cheeky comment supposedly gave the sweet its famous name.

It is a lovely legend, although the exact origin remains uncertain. Taffy was already being sold on the boardwalk before the supposed flood. The story is about how it got its name, rather than a proven account of its invention.

And the answer to that seawater question? Salt water taffy is made without a bucket of ocean water. Traditional recipes can contain ordinary water and salt, but the seaside connection belongs mainly to its history and name.

Joseph Fralinger later helped make taffy a popular holiday souvenir by boxing it for visitors to take home. A little taste of a seaside trip, ready to share with friends and family. Whether those boxes survived the journey without being opened is another question entirely.

The salt water taffy we stock is made in Utah, USA. Its recipe includes corn syrup, sugar, coconut oil and sea salt, along with egg whites and evaporated milk.
